Remote Butt Plug Controls
When it comes to vibrating butt plugs, you’ve got a range of different control options. In this guide, we’re focusing on remote control options, so let’s just assume that you’ve already ruled out vibrating plugs with manual controls (the ones that have a switch on the device itself).
So that leaves us with varying degrees of what we’d consider ‘remote controls’. Let’s explore them, ranging from low-tech to the best of high-tech!
Wired remote control butt plugs
These models have a remote connected to the plug via a cable. So technically these are still ‘remote’ control, in that the controls aren’t on the device itself. So you do have a degree of freedom, but only as far as the cable reaches.
Usually these wouldn’t be our first choice of remote plug, but there are a few exceptions. If you’re short on funds, they do provide a budget option, without the issues you sometime get with cheaper wireless remotes. There are also a handful of devices with unique enough features to make you overlook their wired controls – take for instance the ‘Booty Blaster’ or inflatable plugs, which we’ll cover in a bit more detail later.
Butt plugs with wireless remote controls
Ok, so now we’re onto ‘proper’ remote controls. These typically consist of a discrete, pocket sized remote, that fits in the palm of your hand – usually about the size of a large car key-fob.
Most of them have an on/off button, plus a couple of buttons to scroll through vibration patterns and speeds. These communicate with the butt plug itself using a radio signal. The strength of this signal varies a lot between different devices, but you can expect them to range from around 3 to 6 metres.
Phone app controlled butt plugs
This is where the fun really starts. App controlled vibrators have been around for a while now, so it was only a matter of time before butt plugs got in on the action too.
Instead of using a separate remote, you pair the device with your phone via an app using Bluetooth. If you want to let someone from further away take control of your vibrations, you just connect with them on the app, and they can control your device from anywhere in the world!
If you’re excited about the idea of someone controlling your vibrations from the other side of the table, or across a bar, then just imagine the potential of app controls where distance is no object! Long-distance relationships can take on a whole new concept – you can even get a webcam involved for face-to-face fun no matter where you are!
Apps tend to give much more control, too. So where a standard remote might have 10 different settings, most apps let you choose any combination of intensity and patterns. Many even let you sync with playlists to get your thrills in time with the music!
As app controlled butt plugs are kind of a specialist device, there aren’t quite as many devices to choose from. You’re also going to have to pay a bit more for an app controlled butt plug vs a standard remote control, but you tend to get decent value in terms of device quality and functionality.

Now I’ve talked a little about how remote plugs are controlled, let’s delve into what they actually do. Oh, how we’ve progressed from ye olden times, when you popped a butt plug up your bum, and it just sat there – long gone are those days! Now there’s a whole world of anal delights at the touch of a button, and vibrating is just the start of it! What a time to be alive! The sections below cover some of the most common functions to consider when choosing a plug.
Vibrating
Vibrations are what most of us have come to expect from ‘remote’ devices – you press a button, and they fill you with vibrating goodness. That’s pretty much true of most remote control butt plugs too. But it’s not quite that simple.
Most vibrating plugs come with a range of vibration ‘functions’, which usually mean a combination of different speed and patterns.

Rimming
As far as we know, this type of ‘rimming’ functionality is unique to devices from a brand called b-Vibe, based in the US.
In addition to the usual vibrations, the rimming* stimulation comes from rotating beads in the neck of the plug.
It’s “whisper quiet” and boasts an impressive 9 metre range on the remote. So if you’re interested in some discrete, dual stimulation when you’re our and about, this could certainly make an interesting option.

Thrusting
Thrusting. Yep. It does what it says on the tin. I started off trying to describe the thrusting action what some devices offer, but it just wasn’t cutting it. So here’s a GIF of the aptly named Booty Blaster to show you what I mean:

Inflatable
In our mind, ‘inflatable’ and ‘vibrating’ weren’t really two things that went together. But as is often the case, we’ve been proven wrong!
You pop the un-inflated plug in, then squeeze the hand pump to inflate it to your desired size. These are great for anyone that wants that ‘full’ feeling. Plus you get the added bonus of vibrations at the same time.
The only downside to inflatable plugs, is that by their very nature they’re always corded, so not truly remote control.

Electrostimulation
Ok, so let’s start with the basics – what is electrostimulation?
“Erotic electrostimulation (abbreviated as erotic e-stim and also known as electrosex) is a sexual practice involving the application of electrical stimulation to the nerves of the body, with particular emphasis on the genitals, using a power source for purposes of sexual stimulation.”

You might have heard of violet wands, which are probably the most well known sex toy e-stim devices. This is the ultimate pleasure/pain combo, with both powerful electro pulses and vibrations.
At this point, I have the lyrics from Electic Six firmly embedded in my head: “Danger! Danger! High voltage! When we touch, when we kiss.” I do wonder if they were singing about e-stim butt plugs. It would make sense. Either way, it’s an annoyingly catchy song.
Back onto the matter in hand – one important thing to be aware of if you’re considering any e-stim device, is that they often require you to purchase a separate power unit. Once you have one though, they’re usually interchangeable between different devices.

Prostate massagers
When is a vibrating butt plug not a vibrating butt plug? When it’s a prostate massager, of course!
As the name suggests, these devices are specially designed for gentlemen to target the ‘male G-spot’. There are two key differences between prostate massagers and butt plugs:
- The shape is more curved to provide better prostate stimulation
- They often have an additional motor to target vibrations externally to the perineum

One of the questions we’ve seen asked frequently is “can women use prostate massagers?”. The short answer is, yes. There’s no reason women can’t use prostate massagers. But obviously, they just won’t get the full benefit of them, what with not having a prostate to massage.
Remote control butt plug and cock ring combos
Continuing on the theme of specialist devices for men – here we have a category of butt plugs with a little something extra.

Different butt plug shapes
As is true of us all, vibrating butt plugs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Now, we all know that size does matter, but we’ll come onto that in a moment. For now, let’s have a look at what shapes are available.
One important thing that’s worth considering, is how/where you’re planning on using your plug, and how that will influence the design you need.
For instance, some plugs have a fairly substantial non-insertable end. In other words, they stick out a fair bit! And that’s probably fine for a lot of scenarios, especially in a bedroom setting. But if you’re planning on wearing your new plug out and about, it’s likely you’re going to want to sit down. And that’s when things might get a little uncomfortable, especially if you want to wear it for longer periods.
For this type of usage, you’ll want to look for a model where the base sits snugly between your cheeks. Some models, like the Lovense Hush advertise the fact that they’ve been designed specifically for comfort when being worn over longer periods.
Beyond that, you’re best off just having a look at what’s on offer, and see what takes your fancy. Both Lovehoney and Bondara stock a good range of remote control plugs. They range from almost straight, thin designs, to phallic shaped, to the typical bulb shape associated with butt plugs.
An alternative to the standard butt plug shapes, are vibrating anal beads. These range from the typical string of anal beads you’d usually imagine, to more rigid shapes with several bulbs along the length of a shaft.

Butt plug sizes
Ah the age old question: ‘what size to go for?’. It’s very a case of much horses-for-courses (no pun intended) and personal preference.
Our advice is: Start small. Use plenty of lube. And work your way up if you feel you want something a little more substantial.
There are two main sizes you’ll usually see in product descriptions:
- Insertable Length – The length that goes up you butt!
- Circumference – The measurement around its widest part.

If this is your first butt plug adventure, you might want to start off with a beginners butt plug, or even an anal training butt plug set (they’re much less daunting than the name suggests!). Maybe even start off with a standard butt plug before you dive into using a vibrating model.
At the opposite end of the scale, there’s always something a little larger to cater for more ‘advanced’ anal connoisseurs. Large butt plugs aren’t unusual by any means, but large remote control ones aren’t quite so common. There is of course another, more flexible option too. Inflatable butt plugs give you the option to ‘pump up’ your size if you so desire. Inflatable devices don’t usually come with vibrating functions, or remotes, but there are a couple of models we’ve seen that do, like Bondara’s own 5.5 Inch Vibrating Inflatable Butt Plug.
Discretion
For most people, it’s safe to assume that you’ll want to be sure that your butt plug isn’t going to buzz too loud and broadcast your fun to everyone in the vicinity. You’ll be glad to know, that on the whole, vibrating plugs are pretty discrete. It turns out that sticking such things up your ass tends to keep things quiet. Who’d have thought it, ey?
